For the 7th year in a row, the UK’s Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has entrusted Greytower and siteSifter with the automated part of this year’s SOCITM Better Connected audit (BC10).
During this project — designed to assist local government in making good content accessible to all — a total of 433 sites were to be automatically tested against a SOCITM–specific baseline, and the results collated to form the basis for manual review.
Greytower’s siteSifter testing tool went through approximately two hundred pages from each site — 86,600 pages in all — in a little less than thirty six hours, and delivered over sixteen megabytes worth of custom reports.

With around 1700 members, including 98% of all UK local authorities, it plays a leading role in ICT–facilitated local government transformation in the UK.
This weeks release of siteSifter focus on WCAG 2.0 improvements; specifically to the various patterns used to detect common problems with such things as link texts and alt attributes.

Due to the discovery of a bug in the way generic Excel reports were generated we just released a maintenance version of siteSifter — 2.10p16.
Under all circumstances the generic Excel, CSV and XML report generators should include ALL issues discovered. The generic HTML, PDF, ODF and Word generators will behave as you configure them to in the user interface.

The main feature for this release of siteSifter is the File Archive and ERM Screenshot handling. Documentation for both functions will arrive shortly.
In addition there are several bugfixes, and some UI changes for improved accessibility — and efficiency. You might notice that, when in expert mode, the project details page is easier to access, and that previously well–buried functions are quicker to navigate.
Please note that these functions are brand new, and while thoroughly tested there are still the possibility of errors.

Our new article “92 Accessibility Audits” was released today. This article details the work that Greytower Technologies did alongside other consultants for the Swedish National Audit office in determining the accessibility and usability of Swedish Goverment Websites.

With fresh technology now in place — such as dynamic web font support in several browsers — and a new publishing manager, we’ve decided to redo both structure and design.

This release focus on user interface improvements, as well as bugfixes. It is not likely that you will spot many changes, but they are there.

The 2.10p4 release of siteSifter contains a number of improvements and requested features, in addition to some bugfixes, and refinements of checkpoint parsers.
Firstly, the algorithm used by some baselines to determine whether or not a sequence of headers were, indeed, hierarchical had a tendency to provide false positives. This has been fixed.
Another bug prevented the correct navigation within the Extended Report Module in some, rare, circumstances. Again fixed.
Secondly, the user preference editor has been updated. It is now possible to, on a user–by–user basis, select which date/time format siteSifter should use in the web interface. We’ve included a number of options, and can add more if desired. This should help with usability and accessibility alike. A more specific DATE element would be more helpful, naturally, but until and unless HTML is updated with that we hope this’ll be a good compromise.
Thirdly, we’ve added a Resource Archive, to which files — currently screenshots and CSV files — can be uploaded. These files can later be used in various forms. At the moment the only such use implemented is the ability to specify a list of URIs to mirror and test.
By using this method you can more tightly control which URIs are sifted.
Please note that this feature is brand new, and the likelihood of some bugs creeping in is reasonably high. The ability to use uploaded images in Extended Reports will arrive shortly, as will the chance to upload URI lists in Excel form.
Documentation on new features, as well as some other changes, will also be published as soon as possible; we’ll make a separate announcement to that effect.

I have had the great honour of being invited to the XHTML 2 WG as an expert in accessibility. It sounds so straight–forward, but I shall readily admit that I am somewhat apprehensive — the relationship between XHTML and myself has, at best, been tentative.
As it is likely that HTML 5 and I shall not even progress beyond first date, I have accepted the invitation. Perhaps I can make a difference. After all, it would be impossible to think otherwise, or there wouldn’t be much point to anything.

Version 2.10 of siteSifter is a major upgrade to Greytower’s quality and accessibility testing tool. The release primarily focus on the introduction of the Extended Report Module ( ERM ) , improved tool accessibility and design, and performance upgrades.
An Extended Report is a collection of tests, both automated from siteSifter’s own objective baselines, and manual results from human reviewers. The ERM give users the ability to created extended reports, save them for future work, share them between team members, maintain and adjust a work–flow, and generate reports in a number of formats such as HTML or MS Word.
This new module bridges the gap between automated testing and manual review, making it possible for users to do both in one tool.
Work has also been done on accessibility of the application itself. A new structure, more suitable to keyboard navigation, and a new layout with emphasis on clarity and contrast, make us confident that this version fulfil both WCAG 2.0 to ‘AAA’ and real–world user requirements.
Performance has been improved, with some tests showing a 75% increase in speed; others pick up more detail than ever before.

Once again it is Release Wednesday, and this week we are focusing on bugfixes and UI improvements. Further details will be forthcoming, of course, as will comprehensive documentation.
In short, however, we have added further user preferences, allowing you to turn on and off various parts of the interface as you need them or not. There are also several fixes to the UX, for example in the way menu items are rendered for the various user levels.
All in all we think you should find SSX “cleaned up” quite a bit.

The 2.10 (b13) release of siteSifter is put into production earlier than planned, due in part to certain recently discovered bugs — including a problem with generating reports if the monthly quota is exceeded.
This has been fixed, as has a problem with character sets in the Analytics 15 checkpoint.
In addition a number of Extended Report features has been added; this will be documented in the appropriate section of the user manual as soon as possible.

After over a year with the experimental website based around our server–side stylesheet switcher, it was decided to end the experiment and return to a system based on static documents.
Re–development was begun in December of 2003, and was aimed at producing a faster and even more accessible website. We believe that this goal has been reached, and offer you a site even easier to navigate, with information that can be accessed by anyone, from any browser.
At the same time, our move to establish our position as one of Europe’s leading accessibility experts continue — as part of that effort we have now made www.greytower.co.uk and www.greytower.se active.

This week’s release — 2.10 (p12) — focus on changes to the Extended Report Module. We’ve made several improvements, mainly in the user interface and navigation; all to speed up and make working with ERs easier, and more effective.
We’ve also made a few bugfixes, as well as some changes to, for example, sort algorithms. You might notice that the list of baselines in the ER is now sorted alphabetically.

With the knowledge that the OTRS ticket handling system employed by Greytower is not the world’s most accessible web application, we’ve added a further function to the siteSifter Help Centre.
While the actual handling of tickets are still done by way of OTRS, siteSifter’s web interface now contain a static, exported list of bugs, feature requests, and change suggestions.
In this way we hope that tickets can be handled in an accessible way until we have our own system in place.

As you know we released siteSifter 2.10p21 on Wednesday the 23rd. Sadly we almost immediately found a bug sneaking in, and so on Thursday the 24th there was yet another release, this time to cover the rather serious problem which otherwise would have prevented you from choosing a baseline in the project editor.
This is now fixed. You may notice a few user interface changes; these will be thoroughly documented in the release notes for 2.10p23, due on the 2nd of March.

Formalised standards and guidelines are all well and good, but at times you want a simple, straight–forward, test of good practises when authoring for the web.
This is what our Analytics baseline is for, and while it has always been useful, we’ve spent time making it even more so. As part of this work we’ve talked to developers and designers, and nailed down a number of new checkpoints to include.
With a full eighteen different tests, we are confident that you’ll find something useful. Due to the nature of the Analytics baseline we are also interested in your views on Best Practise, and what we can do to support it.

This week’s see mainly bugfixes, most of them related to the user interface. Some, specifically for the Analytics baseline, improve efficiency and reduce testing time.
Two new features, both related to reports, are in place. The HTML report type has been changed, making it more structured and easier to read and understand — or so we hope. It would be of great help to us if you could test, and report back. If the response is positive, we’ll also redo the Word–, OpenOffice and PDF report types.
The second change is the introduction of “archive” HTML– and Excel reports. This means siteSifter will create one report per checkpoint/test and store them in a ZIP archive which you can then download as usual, instead of one large report for all checkpoints.
“Archive” reports are aimed at those situations where you have a large amount of results, and wish to import them into for example MS Excel — which has a maximum line count of 65,000.
From the project details page, select “Advanced”, then “Report Options”. You can now create a new report based on old test data. If you do so using the HTML– or Excel report types, check the “Create one report per checkpoint … ” box to enable the “archive” feature.
If the feedback on this technique is positive, we will extend it to cover the CSV and XML types as well.

The 2.10 version of siteSifter has proven to be our best yet, but nothing is ever perfect. We have, for example, added a high contrast theme this week, in order to aid accessibility. The theme, available to all clients, is designed to ensure that all colours set by the user is respected.

As you are aware we found ourself with a memory leak just before Easter; a leak which impacted large–scale sift jobs. This is now solved, by way of additional hardware and some software updates. Should you experience any further problems, please let us know.
In addition to these changes, version 2.10p28 focus on the introduction of a new navigation mechanism — what we call a ‘Workflow Wizard’ . You can try it out through the ‘wand’ icon in the main menu, alternatively by the “Workflow Wizard” link. Currently there are two workflows implemented; but we hope that you will let us know which other procedures you’d like to see simplified in this manner.

This week’s release focus mainly on the development of a new baseline. At the same time we are taking the opportunity to deal with a few bugs.
One of the most important of these showed up in the WCAG 2.0 baseline, specifically in the 3.1.1 success criteria: when a document used the XHTML doctype, but the text/html content–type, and only specified language by way of the xml:lang attribute, screen readers had no hook from which to pick up the information.
xml:lang only is permissible under the XHTML specification, but not when using XHTML per AppendiC “HTML Compatibility Guidelines”.
This, and other minor bugs, have been fixed in p15.

Just a little over a month after the latest draft release of the WCAG 2.0 recommendations from the W3C, siteSifter is updated to support the new standard. Even though the final version of WCAG 2 won’t be with us for another four or five months, SSX offer support — and continous updates to that support — for the baseline as of August 2008.

The LinkRot baseline, used to test whether or not links point to the correct place, has been rewritten from scratch, and now offers even more functionality. From a humble beginning with testing only regular links, it now checks any URI found in HTML, XHTML and CSS — including @import–ed CSS — as well as in DOCTYPEs.
A new report format has been created, so that users can have the test results in neat CSV columns for import into spreadsheets. The HTML–based report has also been revamped to include explanations, line numbers, and a new layout.

As you may be aware, we normally release patches to siteSifter Journal every Thursday evening. This is done so that any problems with the new version can be dealt with prior to the weekend.
We are now at a stage in development when feature releases will not be as common as bug–fixes. Therefore we’ve decided to change the day, and release new version on Wednesday evenings Central European Time. Not every week will see releases, of course.

Greytower Technologies and Riksrevisionsverket (The Swedish National Audit Office) today signed an agreement that sees Greytower evaluating a total of ninety–two Swedish goverment websites against the accessibility guidelines created by the World Wide Web Consortium and their Web Accessibility Initiative.
The project will be active through January and most of February 2003, and will result in a comprehensive overview of the state of Swedish goverment information resources on the World Wide Web.

Today’s release of siteSifter 2.10 (p38) marks the last feature–release in the 2.10 series. What this means is that we will bugfix 2.10 until we are ready with a 2.11 (a0) release — likely August.
This week we have added a specialized PDF testing mode, designed to apply checks against PDF files, as opposed to the normal HTML/XHTML documents. The mode can be enabled — please contact us if you wish to test it out.
Several more tests and further enhancements will be added to this mode over the next few weeks. We’ll be happy to accept suggestions as to what should be tested; to start with we’ll base the work on the WCAG PDF guidelines.
There are also several bugfixes in this release.
For the summer we’ll turn our attention to documentation issues, including releases of EPUB (Sony, iPad, iPhone etc), MOBI (Kindle) and PDF versions of our user manual.

With the Candidate Recommendation release of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) revision 2.0 by the W3C, Greytower has begun work on a WCAG 2 baseline which, when completed, will give all users of siteSifter Journal the ability to automatically assess those parts of WCAG 2.0 which are programmatically testable. For those who know siteSifter, it comes as no surprise that our report generators never return a “pass” or “fail” status for entire sites – or even for individual pages.
This is due to the difficulties inherent in automatic testing. Often, a condition can only be determined by human intelligence, and so siteSifter will at all times avoid reporting that a “site is accessible” or “a site is inaccessible”.
On the flip side, this leaves us with reports that require manual labour. In order to make the work easier for people whose primary skills lay elsewhere, we’ve now created the “Impact Analysis” reports.
Such a report contain the same type of information as a fully–fledged site analysis, but focus on the impact each kind of issue has on various groups of users — issues are sorted by their high, medium or low impact.
In addition, modern web application techniques are used to make the finished report independent of Greytower servers, and to aid the user in working through the various issues.
It is our hope that the new Impact Analysis report generator will be helpful to a range of new users of siteSifter.

It’s been a week since we released version 7 of our corporate website, and in that time we’ve had a number of interesting bits of feedback.
The main bulk of comments has been on the accessibility, and so we’ve spent time changing things to improve. For example, the ‘display’ property is no longer used to hide content, as the technique wrecked the experience for screen–reader users.
We’ve also made changes to various alt–texts, added or changed summaries and captions, and in general polished up the site.

Revision 2.9p48 of siteSifter is primarily a maintenance release, aimed at correcting a number of minor bugs. Some changes have been made to the syntax highlight mechanism in the reports so as to make identifying problematic code easier.

In October 2010, the W3C released the “Mobile Web Best Practices” recommendation. This document was meant to aid developers in creating “rich” mobile applications for the web.
It is not a set of guidelines we have had requests for before, but we are happy to announce that a MWBP baseline is now available to all subscribers.
As always, not all of the checkpoints in the recommendation can be automatically tested. Even so, we believe this new baseline will be of help to mobile web developers.

Under some rare circumstances the markup validation parser for WCAG 2.0 used the incorrect character set, and thereby produced false positives. Release 2.9p41 fixes this bug, and adds a number of improvements to both WCAG 1.0 and 2.0 parsers, including a beta version of a more advanced contrast ratio analysis algorithm.

Release 2.10p47 of siteSifter is first and foremost a bugfixing version. A number of minor UI problems have been corrected.
In addition, a new iPad–interface is online; one designed specifically to work with tablet computers.
And, finally, a new baseline is included — this time created from the W3C Mobile Web Best Practice guidelines.
