Release of siteSifter 2.10 (p21)

We are happy to announce the 21st update of siteSifter journal version 2.10. Once again we have plenty of news.

This release focus on user interface improvements, as well as bugfixes. It is not likely that you will spot many changes, but they are there.

First, we’ve improved the user interface by

For users who set their level to “beginner” through the user preferences editor, the UX will now be even more streamlined. The filter bars present on, for example, the project list is gone, the menus made easier to work with, and redundant options removed. It is up to you to chose which level, and with them added complexity, you prefer. The level is a user–preference, not a client preference.

Several texts, such as on the project details page, are now clearer and hopefully less confusing. We’re tried to avoid the most dire of technical slang.

The main header of each page is now structurally right before the main content, thereby making it easier for screen–reader users to navigate; we have also improved the CSS to avoid traps where user–set colours override our own and thereby make the contrast too low. Inline CSS has to a large extend been removed.

It is now not only possible to turn UX elements on and off from the user preference editor, but you can also specify a preferred e–mail address, and whether to use it to fill in other e–mail fields throughout the application.

A set of new JavaScript routines have been added to already existing non–JS functions to enhance functionality. An example of this is the ERM editor, where selecting a new user to assign a report to will automatically fill in the e–mail field — if any e–mail is set. Care has been taken to ensure this is both keyboard– and mouse accessible, and the feature is not essential.

Secondly, there are improvements to baselines and reports:

The “Generic HTML” report generator has been redesigned, and the output is now hopefully far more useful, and easy to read. The statistics section is completely new, and contain not only tables of data but graphs for illustration.

The Analytics baseline has been improved, with several bugfixes and feature enhancements.

Several bespoke baselines are updated and improved.

Projects can now be designated to a specific owner, with the person who create a project the default. This can then be used in various places, such as for example to filter the project list, showing only your own projects.

About Greytower

Greytower Technologies is a Swedish–based company with a UK presence, specialising in system development and automated quality auditing on and for the World Wide Web. We perform single and multiple site audits using a number of different tests suites, including accessibility guidelines.

Greytower has been registered with the Swedish Tax Office since 2002.

siteSifter and siteSifter Journal © 2002 — 2011 Greytower Technologies; all rights reserved.

About siteSifter

siteSifter is a web–based quality and accessibility testing system, complete with project management and workflow features.
Release of siteSifter 2.10 (p4)

Release of siteSifter 2.10p4

The 2.10p4 release of siteSifter contains a number of improvements and requested features, in addition to some bugfixes, and refinements of checkpoint parsers.

Firstly, the algorithm used by some baselines to determine whether or not a sequence of headers were, indeed, hierarchical had a tendency to provide false positives. This has been fixed.

Another bug prevented the correct navigation within the Extended Report Module in some, rare, circumstances. Again fixed.

Secondly, the user preference editor has been updated. It is now possible to, on a user–by–user basis, select which date/time format siteSifter should use in the web interface. We’ve included a number of options, and can add more if desired. This should help with usability and accessibility alike. A more specific DATE element would be more helpful, naturally, but until and unless HTML is updated with that we hope this’ll be a good compromise.

Thirdly, we’ve added a Resource Archive, to which files — currently screenshots and CSV files — can be uploaded. These files can later be used in various forms. At the moment the only such use implemented is the ability to specify a list of URIs to mirror and test.

By using this method you can more tightly control which URIs are sifted.

Please note that this feature is brand new, and the likelihood of some bugs creeping in is reasonably high. The ability to use uploaded images in Extended Reports will arrive shortly, as will the chance to upload URI lists in Excel form.

Documentation on new features, as well as some other changes, will also be published as soon as possible; we’ll make a separate announcement to that effect.

About Greytower

Greytower Technologies is a Swedish–based company with a UK presence, specialising in system development and automated quality auditing on and for the World Wide Web.

Release of siteSifter 2.10

Version 2.10 of siteSifter is a major upgrade to Greytower’s quality and accessibility testing tool. The release primarily focus on the introduction of the Extended Report Module ( ERM ) , improved tool accessibility and design, and performance upgrades.

An Extended Report is a collection of tests, both automated from siteSifter’s own objective baselines, and manual results from human reviewers. The ERM give users the ability to created extended reports, save them for future work, share them between team members, maintain and adjust a work–flow, and generate reports in a number of formats such as HTML or MS Word.

This new module bridges the gap between automated testing and manual review, making it possible for users to do both in one tool.

Work has also been done on accessibility of the application itself. A new structure, more suitable to keyboard navigation, and a new layout with emphasis on clarity and contrast, make us confident that this version fulfil both WCAG 2.0 to ‘AAA’ and real–world user requirements.

Performance has been improved, with some tests showing a 75% increase in speed; others pick up more detail than ever before.

siteSifter 2.10 is the fastest, most flexible and precise website quality and accessibility testing tool so far produced by Greytower.

About Greytower

Greytower Technologies is a Swedish–based company with a UK presence, specialising in system development and automated quality auditing on and for the World Wide Web.

Release of siteSifter 2.10 (p24) (p25)

This week’s see mainly bugfixes, most of them related to the user interface. Some, specifically for the Analytics baseline, improve efficiency and reduce testing time.

Two new features, both related to reports, are in place. The HTML report type has been changed, making it more structured and easier to read and understand — or so we hope. It would be of great help to us if you could test, and report back. If the response is positive, we’ll also redo the Word–, OpenOffice and PDF report types.

The second change is the introduction of “archive” HTML– and Excel reports. This means siteSifter will create one report per checkpoint/test and store them in a ZIP archive which you can then download as usual, instead of one large report for all checkpoints.

“Archive” reports are aimed at those situations where you have a large amount of results, and wish to import them into for example MS Excel — which has a maximum line count of 65,000.

From the project details page, select “Advanced”, then “Report Options”. You can now create a new report based on old test data. If you do so using the HTML– or Excel report types, check the “Create one report per checkpoint … ” box to enable the “archive” feature.

If the feedback on this technique is positive, we will extend it to cover the CSV and XML types as well.

About Greytower

Greytower Technologies is a Swedish–based company with a UK presence, specialising in system development and automated quality auditing on and for the World Wide Web.
Release of siteSifter 2.10 (p23)

This week’s release of siteSifter is a minor maintenance version. It contains only small changes from a user perspective. These release notes cover both version 2.10p22 and 2.10p23, however.

Among the changes are:

Improved Project Editor. It is now easier for advanced and expert users to specify exactly how many documents of which type to be mirrored.

It is also easier to specify that a project should be used as a template in the quick–sift bar.

Project lists can be sorted on title; extended reports can be filtered by date and deleted.

A number of UX improvements have been made:

More space is added between checkboxes and labels.

Form controls have a very visual outline on focus, even when using keyboard navigation.

Duplicate navigation links has been removed, and list styles made consistent across the application.

More links are added between important functions and related sections of the user manual.

Our work has, for various reasons, become delayed. We will be back with more functionality–improvements on the 9th of March.

About Greytower

Greytower Technologies is a Swedish–based company with a UK presence, specialising in system development and automated quality auditing on and for the World Wide Web.
